Biography
An expert in nineteenth-century American art and culture, Lewis held academic and museum posts at the National Gallery of Art, The Mariners' Museum, Towson University, Middlebury College Museum of Art, and the University of Southern Mississippi before joining the Louisiana State Museum as Curator of Visual Arts in 2007.
Lewis is author of "Robert W. Tebbs, Photographer to Architects: Louisiana Plantation Photographs, 1926" (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press 2011) and "The Aesthetics of a Disaster," in "Before (During) After: Louisiana Photographers' Visual Reactions to Hurricane Katrina" (University of New Orleans Press, 2010). Current exhibition projects include "The Plantation Photographs of Robert Tebbs" (LSM, Dec. 5, 2011 - Nov. 2012) "First Steamboat on Western Rivers: The legacy of Mr. Roosevelt's New-Orleans, 1811-1812" (LSM, Jan. 28, 2012 - Dec. 2012), "The Art of Golf" (High Museum of Art, opens Feb. 5, 2012), and "Tokens of Love and Affection" (LSM, Spring 2013).
Lewis holds a Ph.D. in the History of Art (Northwestern University, 1994) and is married to Dr. Jae-Hwa Shin, an associate professor of communcations at the University of Southern Mississippi.
