Tornado: A living beast... Summary

2008 saw the steaming of the first steam engine to be built since 1960 when 'Evening Star' was completed. Built at Darlington LNER A1 No.60163 'Tornado' was the 50th engine of its class to be built.

The A1 Class of engine were principal engines on the East Coast Mainline between 1948 and the end of steam in 1968. Of the 49 engines built between 1948 and 49 at Darlington and Doncaster none survived into preservation making 'Tornado' the sole A1 engine to be steaming in the 21st Century.

'Tornado' is now one of the most famous steam engines in the World and since 2008 the engine has hauled many charter services around the UK and visited several preserved railways.

Since entering service 'Tornado' has carried three liveries, experimental grey which was worn during running in, LNER Apple Green which is most the recognisable livery to 'Tornado' which was worn during 2009 and 10 and BR Brunswick Green which was applied after boiler troubles in 2011.

Throughout the DVD you will witness 'Tornado' haul several mainline charter services including 'The Royal Train', it's first public trips 'The Peppercorn Pioneer', hauling services over the World famous Settle and Carlisle Railway, it's record breaking trip over Shap, plus all three of its initial test runs plus both its loaded test run and light engine test runs during 2011 in Brunswick Green. A range of other charter services are also included.

Footage is also included from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from all three of 'Tornado's' visits including the June 2011 visit when 'Tornado' hauled its first public trains in Brunswick Green. LNER A1 No.60163 is also seen on the Great Central Railway and the East Lancashire Railway.

Brief commentary is included at the start of the DVD which helps to tell the story of 'Tornado'.

The DVD lasts approx. 50 minutes and is available in UK PAL 16:9 Widescreen format only. The DVD is available for £12.95 which includes FREE P&P.

The DVD is also available to purchase from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway and Videoscene (All stock permitting).
