Something I Should Know by Siobhan Kalli

Thirteen-year-old Olivia wants to know the truth. She doesn’t want to go through her whole life wondering who her dad is and what it would be like to meet him. But her mum is so secretive about the whole thing: all she will say is that it’s complicated and Olivia is too young to understand.

So, when Olivia’s cousin Charlie suggests they take matters into their own hands and contact reality TV show Find Your Family, where they reunite family members who’ve lost touch, she knows this could be her only chance.

Together, the two girls fill in the online application form – and it all looks so easy! They are invited to appear on the show and travel to Greece to meet Alexandros Papadopoulos, her mum’s ex and Olivia’s dad.

But all is not as it seems. Someone is hiding the truth about Olivia’s real father. Who is he? Where is he? And how will he feel when he discovers the daughter he never knew he had?

Something I Should Know
08 March 2021
From the beginning, the reader is drawn into thirteen year-old Olivia's quest to find the Dad she has never met. The characters we meet are engaging and their relationships and individual quirks are well observed. The plot moves at a lively pace, with some twists along the way to keep the reader guessing. This is a story of family, friendship, mystery and hope, and will appeal to young readers who enjoy a touching story told with empathy and gentle humour.

Excellent take on old theme - ie, teenager in search of birth mother and/or father. Slightly different here as there is no mystery about who the father is, just that mum will never talk about him so her daughter, egged on by her best friend, sets out to find him. What also lifts this book above the run of the mill is that the author has used a TV reality show to help in the search. A good touch and very well handled. For me, almost the best bit of the book! As a footnote I should add that it is extremely well written - the characters are lively, the dialogue good, and the prose falls easily on the ear.

A strong debut

I was drawn in from the beginning, willing Olivia on to crack the mystery of who her father is. All of the characters are well drawn and the dialogue is excellent in a story that rattles along and feels plausible throughout. It also has some sharp observations on the questionable nature of programmes like Find my Family. A strong debut and I hope there'll be more from this sure footed author.
