The VALKYRIES are a group of Girls Rugby teams drawn from five Singapore Junior Rugby Clubs (Centaurs, Dragons, SCC, Tanglin and Titans). The girls compete domestically and internationally in all-girls competitions and sometimes even against boys teams.
The aim of our program is to introduce girls to contact rugby so they can build confidence, character and lasting bonds through physical activity and team work.
As part of this effort, we have created a Welfare Fund for which we are asking parents, supporters and the girls themselves to raise money. The Welfare Fund will be used to support the VALKYRIES as we develop girls' rugby in Singapore and around the region.
It is important that the girls teams tour because it unifies the teams, supports local programs and inspires other girls to join the sport. We also encourage and support teams from the region to come and visit us here in Singapore.
By our very make-up, we are an inclusive group and we don't want any girl to be prevented from playing and touring due to lack of funds. Thus, the fund will be partially used to provide bursaries to Singapore-based girls who could not otherwise afford to join programs and go on tour.
Regionally, Girls Contact Rugby has also been used as an outreach to support the less fortunate. Our U16s's have just come back from a tournament in Bali where the opposition in the Cup Final was http://jakarta-komodos.com/komodos-care/ drawn from a Jakarta orphanage.
Similarly, for our next trip to Phnom Penh we are playing in a tournament organised by http://www.kampuchearugby.com/about/ another outreach program. Thus, we also want to use the fund to provide help and support to these efforts so that they may be able to come to play with us and develop the life skills and personal confidence that comes uniquely from being part of a rugby team.
In addition, some funds will be used to provide equipment for our teams and those we visit in the region.
