Sidney Sussex was remodelled in  the early 1820s by Jeffry Wyatt, a Buxton man from a family of architects. He rendered the Elizabethan and Jacobean brickwork and built the gatehouse out of stone, and probably carried out this early gothic revival façade in Chapel Court. The style certainly sits with Wilkins at King's and Hutchinson at John's which were happening at the same time. Wyatt was a recent convert to the Gothick having practiced for most of his career in the Classical of late Georgian England. In 1824, aged 58, he won the competition to remodel Windsor Castle, and spent a million pounds over 17 years doing so, probably £100m in today's money. The King allowed him to change his name to Jeffry Wyatville, by which he is better known today. I think Chapel Court here at Sidney Sussex is quite charming, but on a recent visit to Windsor I was very disappointed with the exterior treatment he used there, with endless expanses of what looked like Kentish ragstone.
