It was interesting to go back to UEA after many years. The original Lasdun buildings have been renovated recently, and a huge well done to whoever was responsible, because they have got them back like new from a serious decrepitude. The relationship of the ziggurat residences to the floodplain of the Yare remains a piece of brilliant planning and is the best example of their use. This type of single aspect stepped residential accommodation was in vogue in 1962 with Leslie Martin and Sandy Wilson designing Harvey Court at the same time. The back was always the hard part, best, or rather worst, demonstrated by Lasdun's own Christ's building in Cambridge and its disastrous relationship to King St, now made worse by a poor infill building. Ted Cullinan, who worked on UEA with Lasdun, once told me he would have liked the buildings to be 'hairier', and built out of blockwork. But I think Denys was right, and the concrete panels of the revolutionary 'on site battery precasting system', of which I think this is the only example, do it better, especially when newly cleaned.
