This image contains two of my favourite Cambridge buildings. In the middle is the chapel by Christopher Wren, his first commission, consecrated in 1665. It was commissioned by his uncle Matthew Wren, who was Bishop of Norwich during the crucial years leading up to the Civil War. Wren, a supporter of Laud and a pushy proponent of his high Anglicanism, was a significant factor in Norwich's support for Parliament during the War. He narrowly escaped with his life when Laud went to the scaffold, but spent 18 years in the Tower until the Restoration. This chapel was his thanksgiving. Christopher produced something of a masterpiece for his first job, pointedly bringing the new style of Catholic Europe to Puritan Cambridge. To the right is the building by the ubiquitous Waterhouse that I like best. The quality of the brickwork is astounding.
