This beautiful chapel at Emma was Christopher Wren's second in Cambridge, the first being carried out ten years before at Pembroke for his uncle, Matthew Wren, the then  Bishop of Ely who had spent the whole 18 years of the Civil War and Interegnum in the Tower for his High Church support of Laud. By 1677 when Wren was commissioned here he had become very well established and was working on his City churches and St Paul's. The resulting design is verging on the Baroque and is a very successful use of the giant order and broken pediment so in vogue in Rome in the 1650s. In a way it represents the triumph of the post Civil War Church of England over the Independents, all the more so as Emmanuel College was founded by a Puritan, Walter Mildmay, Chancellor of the Exchequer under Elizabeth, and had as its first Master another, Laurence Chaderton.
