The Caius building facing Kings Parade is the work of Alfred Waterhouse a very popular architect for college buildings in the 1860s and 1870s, probably best known for the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. A Lancashire Quaker, he was a bit too successful to be admired by posterity, but I love the precision of his use of stone coursing and banding – his draughtsmen must have drawn out every one. This project falls between Balliol Oxford and his superb brick building for Pembroke further down Trumpington Street, and is a work of complete assurance at the height of his career.
