Appointing Arne Jacobsen to design this new college in 1962, was a testament to  the extraordinary regard held for Scandinavian modern architecture at the time. It was generally felt that they handled the style with a greater sense of scale, and a more human touch. Jacobsens plan is as functional and single minded as it gets, yet walking around it today it does come across with a calm collegiate feel. When it was listed not so long back the point was made that the south facing rooms, with their all glass facades, made them virtually unusable in summer, and that technically it had been something of a failure. Having said that I had to include the Bell Tower. Alan Bullock, biographer of Hitler, and first master of Catz, raised an extraordinary amount of money to build the new college. Everytime the costs looked like overrunning and Arne dug his heels in about something, Alan would say OK, the bell tower has to go, and Arne would give in. Its all about relieving the long horizontals of the blocks with something vertical. Catz doesnt have a chapel so why should it have a bell tower?
